“All our futures”

I thought this report had some really interesting points, after seeing how long the whole report was I skipped to the chapters which I believed to be more relevant “Creative Education”

I found the four features of creativity paricularly interesting:

Imagination-producing something original, alternative through “mental play… serious play directed towards some creative purpose” (p31)

This feature of creativity expands possibilities, from looking at situations from a new perspective. I think Imagination is a key element in creativity and in our own personal development. If we are unable to see past what we believe to be true and what we physically see, we will struggle to make our own conclusions about situations which we find ourselves in and how to get past a problem which we may face.

Pursuing Purposes- “New purposes are found when an initial product or idea has emerged.” (p31)

This feature refers to the idea that creative insights occur on the way to something, so does this suggest that we have creative thoughts for a particular reason? Or do we have the creative thought and make something out of it if we see that thought as having potential?

(They are my intial ideas to what I just read not sure whether it really makes sense but oh well!)

Being Original- Individual, Relative, Historic

These are the different catergories of “being original”. Historic which may be the most creative catergory of being original as it refers an individual producing original work “in terms of anyone’s previous output” (p32) Which it is argued that it is “more likely to emerge from a system of education which encourages the creative capacities of everyone.” (p32)

Judging Value- Evaluative mode of creativity.

“creative thinking always involves some critical thinking” (p33) Evaluating creative ideas and processes is very important, being able to recognise when creative ideas have hit a dead end and finding ways to overcome them is a key process. I think it’s important to think critically throughout the creative process and not just at the end.

Another section which I thought was interesting was “The Processes of Creativity”

It highlighted the importance of teachers to allow their students to engage with their own creativity;

“A key task for teachers is to help young people to understand these processes and to gain control of them.” (p34)

“asking children to write a poem right away in their best handwriting can destroy the spontaneity they need in the intial phase of generating ideas… need to understand that creativity often develops in phases.” (p35)

I think children should understand that in their learning environment they are allowed to make mistakes, as this is what develops our creativity; by problem solving . All of these key points which I have included should be used to help the young explore their creativity. Imagination in particular should be encouraged within the education system as I agree with what the report suggests that imagination helps us develop our problem solving skills, a key aspect to our creativity.

I think it’s very interesting how a few years ago the curriculum changed to focus heavily on Literacy and numeracy hour, but now it seems as though schools are being advised to use creativity more, the curriculum looks as though it’s going to be moving in a full circle, and I believe that backs up the importance of creativity.

A few songs….

So I’ve waffled on quite a bit about the relevance of music to me and my creative process, so here are some links to some songs which I love to listen to while “being creative!”

Brian Wilson- Your Imagination (OK so the video is a bit random but you can still hear the music… OK its VERY random!!)

The Beatles- All My Loving (this is the song which I find myself singing along to myself.. oh the shame!!)

Hhhmm I think I’ll just leave it as those two for now.. it’s surprising how nervous I am right now! I feel as though I’m exposing everything about me! I guess that’s part of being creative though. ah well.. hope you enjoy them.. and don’t judge me too much!!!

Music is the background to my creativity

As soon as I left the seminar earlier today I put my ipod on for the walk home, and the first song which came on (on shuffle mode!) was Brian Wilson; Your Imagination a song which always engages me with my creative side. It really is one of my all time favourite songs (although I do have a lot of those!) I am a HUGE music fan, all sorts of music inspires me. I love to paint, and back home I do quite a bit, including painting portraits on commission. However, like some people suggested earlier I have to be in the right mood to paint… but what that mood is I really don’t know!! But I do know I have to have music on which I am familar with, this helps me get in “the creative mood”. Being a big fan of all things The Beatles and The Beach Boys for the majority of the time they are the soundtrack of my creativity. I think this is because I see painting as a way of comfort so in order to feel inspired and comfortable within the environment I have to be surrounded by things which make me comfortable including the sounds. Also I think having music on channels me into my painting so I’m not being distracted by other activities which are happening around me. I always find I’m so involved with the painting that I start singing along with the music without realising it, a bit like how we were thinking about how we can drive somewhere and think “how did i get here??” (which I do a lot worryingly!) I don’t even have a driving licence. (That was a joke, a pathetic one but a joke non the less)

It’s difficult to describe what creativity feels like. For me I guess it’s something like having confidence in myself. When I paint a portrait for example, it takes hours and up until the last minute it looks nothing like who it is meant to look like, but I have the confidence and the drive to keep going and then I stand back and suddenly its completely trasformed. When the creative bug strikes I have an urge to paint or to play music. Music is very important to me, I play several instruments including the guitar which is my favourite but if I don’t feel in that mysterious “mood” the guitar will just stay in the corner!

For every important event that has happened in my life there is a song which goes with it and every time I hear it I am transported back to that time. And I think that is the importance of music! I will post some links to my favourite songs which help me feel creative, it would be interesting to hear what you think of them!

Beginning of module…

I thought the first session was very interesting, in particular the Ken Robinson video. I am very interested in the idea that schools kill creativity. I strongly believe that children thrive when fully engaged in their learning something which I think they can do in a creative environment along with tasks which spark their imagination. I am looking forward to this aspect of the module, how creativity can be used with other curricular based topics to engage pupils with their learning, so in a way; they learn without realising.

I definetely benefitted from the free writing task and it will be very useful when it comes to essay writing time! Normally I find I think too much about what I am writing so end up missing out important points. Having the freedom of writing literally anything was something which I wasn’t used to but I will use it now when it comes to writing essays, that way I will at least be able to get on paper everything I want to say and will go back over it to edit it to make the points clear.

I’m very much looking forward to this module!
